CONDITIONS WE TREAT
Jaw Pain & TMJ Dysfunction
Jaw pain, clicking, clenching, and TMJ dysfunction. A clinical area of particular interest across our team.

The temporomandibular joint (TMJ) is one of the most frequently used joints in the body. It connects your jaw to your skull and is involved in every bite, word, and yawn. When this joint is not functioning properly, the effects can extend well beyond the jaw itself, contributing to headaches, neck pain, ear discomfort, and difficulty fully opening the mouth.

TMJ dysfunction is more common than many people realise, and the relationship between jaw mechanics, cervical spine function, posture, and stress is well established in the clinical literature. Osteopathic assessment of jaw presentations looks at the jaw in the context of the whole head, neck, and nervous system rather than in isolation, which often reveals contributing factors that have not previously been identified.

It is worth noting that TMJ dysfunction exists on a spectrum. Some people experience mild clicking or occasional discomfort. Others have significant pain, restricted mouth opening, or symptoms that have been present and unresolved for years. Both ends of this spectrum may respond to osteopathic care.
WHO IT HELPS
Assessment and treatment address the jaw in the context of the whole head, neck, and nervous system. We work collaboratively with dentists and other health professionals where appropriate.

Your osteopath may assess jaw movement, bite patterns, cervical spine function, and cranial mechanics to build a complete picture of what may be contributing to your presentation. Treatment is always guided by what is found on assessment and what you report about your symptoms.

Teeth clenching or grinding (bruxism)
-
Difficulty opening the mouth fully
-
Facial pain or discomfort around the cheeks and temples
-
Ear pain or fullness without an identifiable ear cause
-
Headaches arising from the jaw or base of skull
-
Neck pain associated with jaw dysfunction

Post-dental work jaw discomfort
Your first appointment
Your first session includes a thorough history covering your jaw symptoms, dental history, headache pattern, and any associated neck or facial pain.
Your osteopath will explain what they find before any treatment begins and will give you realistic expectations about the management process.
Some people notice changes after their first session. For longer-standing presentations, a course of treatment is more typical. We will refer on to a dentist or specialist if we identify anything outside our scope or if a splint or other intervention may be beneficial alongside osteopathic care.

Being mindful of clenching during the day, particularly during periods of concentration or stress
-
Avoiding hard or chewy foods during acute flare-ups
-
Gentle jaw stretches as directed by your osteopath
-
Heat applied to the jaw and surrounding muscles may provide temporary relief
-
Awareness of posture, particularly forward head position, which can increase load on the jaw joint
-
Discussing night grinding with your dentist, who may recommend a splint
