Lymphatic Conditions
Advanced lymphatic assessment and management for lymphoedema, lipoedema, post-surgical swelling, and MLD-indicated presentations.

HOW WE TREAT IT
Our approach
The lymphatic system plays a critical role in fluid balance, immune function, and waste removal throughout the body. When lymphatic drainage is compromised, fluid can accumulate in the tissues, causing swelling, heaviness, discomfort, and reduced mobility. These presentations are often chronic, frequently misunderstood, and require specialist management rather than general treatment.

At Whole Health, Melissa Doran is trained in both Manual Lymphatic Drainage and Complete Decongestive Therapy, including compression garment fitting. This level of specialist training is difficult to find in private practice, and it means we are able to offer a genuinely comprehensive approach to lymphatic management rather than a basic massage-based approximation.
Lymphatic presentations often require a long-term management approach rather than a short course of treatment. We work collaboratively with GPs, oncologists, vascular specialists, and other health professionals to ensure care is coordinated appropriately.
Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT) is the gold standard approach to lymphoedema management. It is a multi-component program that combines manual lymphatic drainage, compression bandaging or garment fitting, skin care, and exercise to reduce swelling and support long-term management.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) is a gentle, rhythmic massage technique that stimulates the lymphatic system to improve drainage and reduce fluid accumulation. It is distinct from regular massage in both technique and intention, and requires specific training to perform correctly.

Compression garment fitting is an important component of long-term lymphatic management. Melissa is trained in garment measurement and fitting, and can assist with selecting the appropriate garment for your presentation and lifestyle.

The program is tailored to your presentation, your stage of condition, and your daily life. Melissa will explain each component clearly and work with you to develop a maintenance routine you can sustain between appointments.

WHAT TO EXPECT
Your first appointment
Your first session includes a detailed assessment of your lymphatic presentation, skin condition, swelling pattern, and treatment history. Melissa will explain the full management approach and give you realistic expectations about the timeline and process.
Compression garment measurement and fitting can be arranged as part of your care. We will liaise with your medical team where appropriate and always refer on if we identify anything requiring further investigation.
A NOTE ON MANAGEMENT
Lymphatic conditions require long term care
Lymphatic conditions such as lymphoedema and lipoedema are chronic conditions that cannot be cured, but they can be well-managed with the right approach.
The goal of treatment is to reduce swelling, manage symptoms, prevent progression, and support your quality of life over time.
Self-management between appointments, including use of compression garments, skin care, and appropriate exercise, plays a significant role in outcomes.
Melissa will work with you to build a self-management routine that fits your life, and we encourage you to maintain regular contact with your GP or specialist alongside your treatment at Whole Health
