5 Reasons you Should Drink Water after a Treatment
Updated: Oct 31, 2018
Everyone knows that drinking water is good for you, but so many people don’t drink enough. Staying adequately hydrated day to day is essential to the proper functioning of the human body, and you will feel better for it! I know I regularly suggest to patients that they drink water after their treatment, and I have even taken to handing them a glass when they leave! So below are five reasons you should indulge yourself in some H2O!
1: Water helps restore circulation to the muscles
When you have a restriction to an area, circulation can also be restricted. So once you have been treated and the restriction has been released, blood supply to the area is restored to normal. Drinking water allows the body to get hydrated, and this allows the circulatory system function easier by moving blood to the newly treated area more sufficiently, supplying it with oxygen and nutrients.
2: Water helps to lessen pain and soreness after a massage
Since approximately 60% of joint cartilage is made from water, it is critical that we keep hydrated when we’re dealing with inflammation around the joints, and when we’re in pain. When you’ve had treatment, you have been worked over and had your body moved into different ranges of motion, which can cause you to be sore afterwards, so keeping hydrated helps the synovial fluid to absorb shock and lubricate the joints after treatment.
3: Water helps support the lymphatic drainage system
One of the systems that are optimised by osteopathic treatment is the lymphatic system. The lymphatic system assists the body in removing wastes and toxins from all systems through the movement of fluid. Muscles, for instance, produce metabolic waste just through everyday function. After the lymphatic system has sorted through the waste, it is returned to the blood circulation where it is taken to the kidneys. The kidneys filter the waste and then flush it out in your urine.
4: Water helps to cleanse the body from any toxins released by the muscles during a massage
So now that the circulatory and lymphatic systems are functioning a little better than before after your treatment, drinking plenty of water after your treatment will assist the kidneys in flushing out toxins and waste more quickly by drinking lots of water.
5: Refuel your body
Drinking a glass of water following your massage will help to refuel your body, making you feel refreshed, reinvigorated and ready to power on through the rest of your day!
